Mesa County Sheriff Matt Lewis (center) and Captain Art Smith (right) accept the Correctional Officers’ Week proclamation.

Mesa County Commissioners proclaimed May 2-8, 2021, as Correctional Officers’ Week and publicly salute the service of detention deputies who work in our Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.

Correctional officers are responsible for the safety, containment, and control of hundreds of inmates in Mesa County. They are trained law enforcement professionals dedicated to maintaining secure correctional facilities and ensuring public safety.

To date, there have been more than 700 correctional officers killed in the line of duty. Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputy Edward Innes was killed on September 27, 1906, during an inmate jail escape. The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial walls in Washington, D.C.
