Joe Kellerby (center), Director of Child Welfare/Adult Protection, accepts the National Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation presented by the Board of Mesa County Commissioners on Monday, April 5, 2021.

The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed April 2021 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Mesa County and calls upon all residents, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities, and businesses to participate in programs and activities that help prevent child abuse.

"Child abuse is a community problem and requires a community solution," Janet Rowland, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners, said. "It is critical that people pay attention to the children around them and report concerns when necessary, but also look for ways to support or encourage parents who might be stressed or overwhelmed."

In 2020, 4,429 child welfare referrals were received in Mesa County. The majority of child abuse cases can be prevented if our community is engaged and supportive through programs and activities that promote and create strong and thriving families.

Our community must work together to increase awareness about child abuse and promote children's social and emotional well‐being. Prevention remains the best defense for our children and families.

To report suspicion of child abuse or neglect, call 970-242-1211 or 1-844-CO-4-KIDS.
