Mesa County Road and Bridge crews are working on fog sealing roads that have been recently chip sealed. A fog seal is an application of a specially formulated thin liquid oil to chip sealed roads to fasten gravel in place.

Fog seal applications serve to seal gravel and narrow cracks and to help preserve the underlying road structure. It also provides a deep, rich black pavement surface color.
Fog seals are applied by a distributor truck, which heats the oil before spraying it onto the road. Once treated, the surface has a dark appearance.
