Often times we throw our trash away without ever thinking about where it goes next. In Mesa County, trash is deposited in sanitary landfills. Landfills are a modern and efficient means for people to dispose of their garbage in a safe environment.
Mesa County owns and operates a 127-acre landfill, an 11-acre composting facility, the largest Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility on the Western Slope, and four transfer stations. These facilities provide residents with free disposal of yard waste, household chemicals, and traditional recyclables like cardboard, paper, plastic, and metal. Each year our community throws out over 180,000 tons of garbage. That is 6 ½ lbs of waste per person every day of the year!
A waste study conducted in 2018 found that of the garbage brought to the landfill, nearly 1/3 is recyclable, 1/3 is compostable, and only 1/3 is truly trash. With this in mind, the Mesa County Solid Waste Management team encourages residents to exercise responsible consumption and disposal practices.
The Solid Waste Management team's mission is to provide the residents of Mesa County with environmentally responsible and fiscally accessible waste disposal options. Together we can ensure a healthy and thriving environment for generations to come.
