Expect delays as a new scale gets installed at the Mesa County Landfill — construction starts June 2, 2021. |
If you are dropping off trash at the Mesa County Landfill, expect delays as crews install a new inbound scale used to weigh vehicles as they enter the landfill. Construction will begin on Wednesday, June 2, and will take approximately one week to complete.
Landfill crew members will direct inbound traffic onto the inbound scale typically reserved for commercial trash haulers.
“Customers utilizing the landfill should expect longer than usual wait times when coming into the landfill,” Jennifer Richardson, Solid Waste & Sustainability Division Director, said. “We ask residents to be patient with landfill staff and wait for the scale house attendant to wave to them before driving on to and off of the inbound scale.”
Crews will use a crane to lift out the existing 70-foot-long scale, removing the old scale's concrete deck, load cells, and weigh terminal hardware. Then they will prepare the area for the new 70-foot scale, installing a steel deck, load cells, weighbridge, and weigh terminal.
The landfill serves approximately 500 vehicles a day, with Monday and Saturday being the busiest days of the week.
“The majority of landfill transactions are done by weight. Vehicles entering the landfill are weighed on the landfill's inbound scale. After dumping their trash, vehicles weigh again on the outbound scale,” Richardson added. “Landfill fees are based on the amount of weight dropped. Landfill scales are certified by the state annually and serviced bi-annually to ensure accuracy. The landfill's in-ground, inbound scale is the original Cardinal scale installed nearly 20 years ago. The scale deck is concrete, and its condition has deteriorated.”The Board of Mesa County Commissioners approved the $72,700 project during the public hearing of April 19, 2021.
