The Mesa County Commissioners voted unanimously to pass a resolution to support individuals' and businesses' rights to be free to choose how they protect themselves from COVID-19.

"Choices have consequences — they’re choices we elect to make for ourselves — and the consequences are ours to bear," said Commissioner Cody Davis. "That’s called freedom."

After public comment, at the Board of Commissioners meeting Monday morning, the resolution came to a vote. A few individuals and business owners attended in-person and shared their support for the adoption of the resolution.

"Our goal is to strike a balance to start building back our economy," Commissioner Davis added. "Individuals will choose whether they want to continue to wear face coverings, stay at home, or frequent businesses that may or may not require face coverings."

The resolution resolved that "Mesa County's Free to Choose initiative will go into effect at the point in which all Mesa County residents 16 years of age and over have adequate access to the COVID-19 vaccine."

The anticipated date for the resolution to go into effect is after April 16 but no later than May 1, 2021.

Throughout the meeting, the Mesa County Commissioners expressed the resolution empowers people to make choices for themselves as the county moves to reopen fully.

The Mesa County Board of Health is a co-signer on the resolution. They signed it on March 17, 2021.
