Did you know that Mesa County operates a composting facility where residents can recycle their yard waste for free? Well, they do!
The Organic Materials Composting Facility has provided free compost drop-off to Mesa County residents for nearly 20 years. Since opening in 2001, the facility has accepted over 250,000 tons of green waste from Mesa County residents. By bringing their green waste to the compost facility, residents have helped the landfill save nearly 850,000 cubic yards of airspace. These efforts have extended the life of the landfill by over five years!
Composting is nature’s way of recycling nutrients from dead organic material into the basic building blocks of new plant growth. Mesa County utilizes specialized heavy equipment to speed up the natural decomposition process and produce uniform, high-quality soil amendments sold to the public at a lower rate than most commercially available products.
The compost facility sells 1/2” compost, 1/4” compost, ultra-fine compost, and wood mulch. It is important to remember that compost is not soil, but it is a soil amendment. Meaning you can mix it with the native soil to improve the overall health of your soil.
The Organic Materials Composting Facility accepts tree limbs, grass clippings, weeds, leaves, hay, animal bedding, manure, and hedge trimmings for free on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The facility does not accept treated wood, lumber, pallets, burnt wood, root balls, sod, cardboard, or food waste.
