Mesa County Road and Bridge crews use a road reclaimer to blend the top six inches of the existing road surface with water and Earthbind to create a homogenous and robust surface.

Last week, Mesa County Road and Bridge crews worked on rehabilitating a portion of B South (B S) Road in Glade Park. Earthbind, a bio-based modified asphalt emulsion for unpaved surfaces, was injected as a binding agent during the process to help stabilize the road surface and provide dust control. The technique utilizes a road reclaimer to blend the top six inches of the existing road surface, or aggregate base, with water and Earthbind to create a homogenous and robust surface. This surface can then be used as a driving surface or later be paved over.

Crews use Earthbind in the reclamation process to reduce maintenance needs by providing dust control and providing a smooth, durable driving surface.

Although unpaved roads such as B S Road have low-volume traffic, they require costly routine maintenance such as blading and application of dust control. The use of the Earthbind in the reclamation process will significantly reduce the annual maintenance needs while providing a smooth, durable driving surface and eliminating most fugitive dust issues.

The Mesa County Road and Bridge Department aims to maintain the quality of our road system while making the best use of resources cost-effectively.
