A Foster and Kinship Parent Advisory Council was recently created in Mesa County to develop strategies to strengthen communication and transparency among foster parents, placement agencies and community members involved in the child welfare system.
In 2015, Mesa County began a journey to identify communication issues surrounding Mesa County Department of Human Services and foster care providers. A study was conducted by the Public Consulting Group, to assist in determining areas of improvement and solutions. As a result, the advisory council was assembled to help improve service delivery to families.
“As electeds, we sometimes work on projects for years before seeing any real progress, but finally projects that I have been invested in seem to really be taking off,” Mesa County Commissioner Rose Pugliese said. “Specifically the Foster and Kinship Parent Advisory, whose members have started to meet and will be meeting to improve foster care relationships and communications.”
The Foster and Kinship Parent Advisory Council is comprised of a group of foster parents, service providers and family advocates, who will work together to build healthy families and continue to improve the child welfare system to enhance family preservation and quality services to system-involved families.
The council is the first of its kind in Colorado and was formed to strengthen the collaboration between the foster and kinship community for the safety of children, by empowering parents and the collaborative efforts of MCDHS with community providers to enhance family preservation.
“Years later, the council is up and running!” Pugliese added. “I am so proud of the work our Board is doing to move our community forward!”
