Melissa Schierland Selected as Economic Assistance Division Director

Mesa County Department of Human Services is pleased to announce the hiring of Melissa Schierland as its new Economic Assistance Division Director. Schierland had been partnering as co-interim director along with Susan Skyberg since early October.

Schierland comes to the position with plenty of experience within the department. Her time with the Department of Human Services began in 2010 as a TANF Case Manager. She later became the Child Care Assistance Program Supervisor, a position she has held for eight years.

With a renewed focus on community outcomes, Schierland has assembled a process improvement team with a concentration on customer service. As her employees continue to work tirelessly on current cases, they will be reoriented and cross-trained to better process applications to the various programs and services available. Schierland is also intent on an overall improvement of workplace climate and culture within the Economic Assistance Division.

Before she came to the Department of Human Services, Schierland was a licensed funeral director for 17 years. She is a passionate leader with strong community ties in the Grand Valley.

"I look forward to working with the division to improve processes and better serve our community,” says Schierland. “It is my mission as a leader to serve the people of Mesa County and to connect them with the programs and resources they need to be stable and successful.”
